Terms and Conditions
These are the terms I work to. They are written to be read, not to be got past: the charges, the guarantee and its limits, what happens if a visit is cancelled, and what I need from you on the day.
Who these terms are with
Tarka Boilers is a trading name of George Lane, a Gas Safe registered heating engineer, registration number 515374, based in South Molton, Devon. These terms apply to work I carry out for you and to any booking you make by phone, email or through this website.
All work is carried out by me. I do not subcontract.
Charges
A repair visit carries a £105 including-VAT minimum charge. The £105 including-VAT minimum covers attendance and diagnosis, travel within 25 miles of South Molton, and up to 60 minutes at the property. The full minimum applies to shorter visits. Parts and materials are extra, and any further work is fixed-price quoted before it proceeds.
Published fixed prices for servicing, gas safety checks and unvented cylinder work are the prices you pay for that work as described. Anything outside it is quoted at a fixed price and only proceeds once you have agreed to it.
Travel within 25 miles of South Molton is included; beyond that radius, a £30 including-VAT travel charge applies and is disclosed before booking.
All prices on this site include VAT.
Payment
Payment for a service, gas safety check or repair is due on completion, before I leave the property, unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.
Where a job requires materials to be bought in advance, I may ask for a deposit before ordering. Any deposit is set against the final invoice.
Late payments may accrue interest at 8% above the Bank of England base rate.
Appointments, and what I promise about them
When you book, I'll confirm it and give you a two-hour window rather than a whole day sat at home waiting. On the morning you get a text with a tracking link, so you can see where I've got to instead of wondering. Traffic and the job before yours are real, so it's a window rather than a promise to the minute, but if it slips you'll hear it from me first.
The tracking link is provided for your convenience. It shows my position while I am on my way to you and stops when I arrive.
You'll get an answer. Ring or message during the working day and you'll hear back the same day; evenings and weekends, it'll be the next working day. And if it isn't a job for me, I'll tell you that and point you at someone who can help, rather than going quiet on you.
Cancelling or rearranging
If you booked online or by phone, you have 14 days to cancel without penalty. You lose that right if you ask me to start work inside the 14 days and the work is then completed, and if work has begun you pay for the part that has been done.
If you cancel or rearrange with less than 24 hours notice, I may keep any prepayment to cover the time set aside. If a booking is rearranged more than three times, I may ask for payment in advance before booking again.
Guarantee on parts I fit
Parts I fit are guaranteed for 12 months, and that covers the labour to put it right as well as the part. What it doesn't cover is the rest of a boiler I didn't supply, boilers over 10 years old, or damage caused by sludge and scale in the system. If any of that applies to yours, I'll tell you before the work, not after it.
The guarantee does not cover a part that has been worked on or modified by someone else after I fitted it.
A boiler service is a check of the appliance on the day. It is not a warranty that the appliance will not develop a fault afterwards, and the same applies to an unvented cylinder service.
What I need from you
Reasonable access to the appliance and the working area, cleared of anything you would not want moved, and a safe place to work.
Legal parking within about 50 metres of the property. Where no legal parking is available, any parking charge or fine incurred is passed on to you.
An adult over 18 present at the property for the duration of the visit.
Scope of work
I work on mains-gas appliances only. I do not currently work on LPG boilers; that needs a Gas Safe engineer whose registration covers the relevant LPG work. Oil boiler work needs an OFTEC-registered engineer and is not available.
Old and awkward is normal work here, not a reason to be turned away. Back boilers, open-vented systems, system and regular boilers, microbore pipework, boilers sited where somebody put them forty years ago and nobody has fancied since. The one honest catch is parts: if a component isn't made any more, I'll tell you that before you spend anything.
Where new work is connected to an existing system, I am not responsible for pre-existing faults in that system, or for faults caused by sludge, scale or poor water quality in it. Where I can see that risk before starting, I will tell you about it and quote for putting it right rather than working around it.
Safety and the right to stop work
If I find an appliance or installation that is immediately dangerous, I am required to make it safe, which may mean disconnecting it. I will explain what I have found and why before I do anything.
I operate a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive, threatening, aggressive or discriminatory behaviour, and will stop work and leave immediately if it occurs. Work completed up to that point remains payable.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Beyond that, liability is limited to putting right my own work, and does not extend to indirect losses.
These terms do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.
Complaints
If something is wrong, tell me first: 01271 444410 or info@tarkaboilersbarnstaple.co.uk. I read every message myself. Gas safety concerns about work I have carried out can also be raised with the Gas Safe Register.
