Priced before I start
The price depends on the thermostat you choose, whether I supply it or you do, how many smart radiator valves you want, and the wiring you already have. Tell me what you're after and you get a fixed price, including VAT, which you agree before I start.
Travel is included in every price. There is no travel charge anywhere I cover.
Every price includes VAT. Repairs are £220 for all the labour, however long it takes, and parts are priced before they're fitted. Decide not to go ahead, and you only pay £105 for the visit. If you're in North Devon, travel is included.
I'm George Lane, a Gas Safe registered engineer (No. 515374), and I fit Hive, Tado and Nest smart thermostats across Barnstaple and North Devon. Each job is priced and agreed before I start, including VAT, and I set the thermostat up on your phone before I leave.
A smart thermostat lets you run the heating from your phone, set it around how you live now rather than how you lived when the old timer went in, and stop heating an empty house. Fitting it is half the job. A smart thermostat that's wired in but badly set up is an expensive dial on the wall, so I do both, and I do every job myself.
Which smart thermostat should you choose?
Choose by how you live: Nest if you want it to learn your routine, Hive for simple schedules, and Tado if your days don't follow a fixed pattern.
Google Nest Learning Thermostat. It learns your routine over the first week or so and builds a heating programme for you. It works with Google Home and Alexa. A good fit for a household that wants the thermostat to look after itself.
Hive Active Heating. Straightforward, with a clear app. A good fit for a household that wants simple schedules and manual control rather than a thermostat that learns.
Tado. Its standout feature is geofencing: it can turn the heating up when you're on your way home and down when everyone has gone out. Add Tado's smart radiator valves and you can control room by room. A good fit for people whose days don't follow a fixed pattern.

What smart heating work do I cover?
Hive, Tado and Nest installation, including the receiver or heat link at the boiler, the app set-up, and Tado's smart radiator valves set up room by room.
Heating controls upgrade. Old mechanical timers and a single thermostat replaced with programmable controls, zoned where the system allows.
Thermostat replacement for faulty room and cylinder thermostats: replaced, wired and tested.
Will a smart thermostat work with my boiler?
Almost certainly. Hive, Tado and Nest work with the large majority of mains-gas boilers already fitted in North Devon homes, combi, system and regular. Most connect through a receiver wired in at the boiler, often where the old timer or thermostat was, and the older the system, the more the wiring varies.
When you book, tell me the make and model of your boiler and roughly how old it is, and I'll check it's compatible before I come out.
Why does the set-up matter as much as the wiring?
A smart thermostat that's wired correctly but set up badly can run the heating around the clock, whatever the app says. So the job isn't finished when it's on the wall: I set the schedule, connect the app on your phone, and show you how to change it before I leave.
Will a smart thermostat save money?
It depends on how your heating was controlled before. If it runs on a fixed programme set years ago and never changed, the saving can be worthwhile. If you already turn the heating down when you go out, it will be smaller.
What a smart thermostat reliably does is stop the heating running when nobody's home, and make it much easier to manage from wherever you are.
