Done Right. In Barnstaple & across North Devon

How It Works

What actually happens when you ring.

You Get an Answer

You'll get an answer. Ring or message during the working day and you'll hear back the same day; evenings and weekends, it'll be the next working day. And if it isn't a job for me, I'll tell you that and point you at someone who can help, rather than going quiet on you. I’ll explain the £105 including-VAT repair minimum and confirm any travel charge before booking.

I Turn Up When I Said

When you book, I'll confirm it and give you a two-hour window rather than a whole day sat at home waiting. On the morning you get a text with a tracking link, so you can see where I've got to instead of wondering. Traffic and the job before yours are real, so it's a window rather than a promise to the minute, but if it slips you'll hear it from me first. I protect the area I’m working in and clear up after myself.

Diagnosis, Then a Fixed Price

Every visit starts with finding out what's actually wrong, not with a quote for a new boiler. I'll show you what I've found and what it means, and you'll have a fixed price before I go any further. I don't earn commission on boiler sales, so there is nothing pulling me towards telling you to replace something that can be fixed. The paperwork comes on the day, not a fortnight later: a written record of what I checked, what I tested and what I found. Gas safety certificates go over by email the same day, which is what a letting agent, an insurer or a buyer's solicitor will ask you for.

25+ Years, Hundreds of Happy Customers

What George's Customers Say

The whole process from initial queries to online booking and service delivery was absolutely hassle free and impeccable. The engineer turned up on time, treated my house with great care, and made my old boiler running like new.

Lei Yu

Homeowner, Kent (customer of George's previous business)

First class service!! I was told I need a new boiler at cost of £2000, I rang George because of his reviews — they are truly justified! He replaced a faulty part at a fraction of what I was quoted elsewhere! Thank you George, a customer forever.

Michael Thompson

Homeowner, Kent (customer of George's previous business)

Service is second to none, I've been using them for 7 years now. George is very polite, professional and gets the job done on time. He's always been punctual, even sends a text alert to let you know when he's on his way with an ETA.

Raj Uppal

Homeowner, Kent (customer of George's previous business)

George Lane at Tarka Boilers is the best of the best; he has superb technical ability combined with an engaging and likeable nature. George is always willing to give free unbiased advice. An example to all tradesmen.

The Engineer

I'm George. I've been doing this for 25 years.

I started as an apprentice and spent the next two and a half decades in Kent, building a business on turning up and telling people the truth. We moved to North Devon because it's a better place to live. The standards came with us.

I work on my own, so the person who quotes your job is the person who does it. No subcontractor you've never met, and nothing on the invoice you weren't told about first.

After 25 years there aren't many faults I haven't met before, on pretty much every brand made in that time. I'll find out what's actually wrong, tell you what it costs, and let you decide.

Common Questions

Questions I get asked every week.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement for any work on gas appliances in the UK. My registration number is 515374. You can verify it at gassaferegister.co.uk.

What areas do you cover?

I serve Barnstaple and towns and villages across North Devon. Travel within 25 miles of South Molton is included; a £30 including-VAT travel charge applies beyond that radius and is confirmed before booking.

How much does a boiler repair cost?

The minimum repair charge is £105 including VAT. It includes attendance and diagnosis, travel within 25 miles of South Molton, and up to 60 minutes at the property. The full charge applies even if the visit takes less than 60 minutes. Parts and materials are extra. If more work is needed, I give you a fixed-price quote before proceeding.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No. There is no separate call-out fee on top of the labour. A repair visit has a £105 including-VAT minimum charge, and that one figure covers attendance, diagnosis, travel within 25 miles of South Molton, and up to 60 minutes at the property. The full £105 applies even if the visit takes less than 60 minutes. Parts and materials are not included, and any further work is fixed-price quoted before it proceeds.

How quickly can you come out if my boiler has broken down?

For emergencies, I aim to reach you the same day where possible. For routine repairs and servicing, I’ll get you booked in as soon as I can. You'll get an answer. Ring or message during the working day and you'll hear back the same day; evenings and weekends, it'll be the next working day. And if it isn't a job for me, I'll tell you that and point you at someone who can help, rather than going quiet on you.

Will you turn up when you say you will?

When you book, I'll confirm it and give you a two-hour window rather than a whole day sat at home waiting. On the morning you get a text with a tracking link, so you can see where I've got to instead of wondering. Traffic and the job before yours are real, so it's a window rather than a promise to the minute, but if it slips you'll hear it from me first.

Will you tell me if my boiler isn’t worth repairing?

Every visit starts with finding out what's actually wrong, not with a quote for a new boiler. I'll show you what I've found and what it means, and you'll have a fixed price before I go any further. I don't earn commission on boiler sales, so there is nothing pulling me towards telling you to replace something that can be fixed.

What happens if the repair fails again?

Parts I fit are guaranteed for 12 months, and that covers the labour to put it right as well as the part. What it doesn't cover is the rest of a boiler I didn't supply, boilers over 10 years old, or damage caused by sludge and scale in the system. If any of that applies to yours, I'll tell you before the work, not after it.

Do you service oil boilers?

No. Oil boiler servicing is not currently available. I service domestic gas boilers.

Do you work on older or unusual systems?

Old and awkward is normal work here, not a reason to be turned away. Back boilers, open-vented systems, system and regular boilers, microbore pipework, boilers sited where somebody put them forty years ago and nobody has fancied since. The one honest catch is parts: if a component isn't made any more, I'll tell you that before you spend anything. In 25+ years I’ve worked on every major brand: Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Potterton, Viessmann, and more.
