The G3 qualification (also known as the Unvented Hot Water Storage qualification) is a mandatory requirement for anyone working on these systems under Part G of the Building Regulations. It covers the specific risks associated with high-pressure stored hot water — primarily the risk of pressure build-up due to failed safety devices.
An engineer without a G3 qualification cannot legally carry out servicing or repair work on an unvented cylinder. This matters practically: if an unserviced or improperly repaired cylinder causes damage or injury, your home insurance may not cover it, and the engineer involved faces serious legal exposure.
