Unvented Cylinders in Barnstaple

An unvented hot water cylinder stores mains-pressure hot water — no header tank in the loft, no cold feed from a tank, no gravity-fed trickle at the shower head. Water comes in from the mains, gets heated, and comes out at the same pressure it arrived. That's the appeal. It's also why all work on an unvented cylinder must be carried out by a G3-qualified engineer, not just any plumber or heating engineer.

Unvented cylinders are most common in Barnstaple's larger properties. The newer estates at Roundswell and other developments built since the late 1990s are the most likely source of unvented installs — these were built to modern specification with mains-pressure hot water as standard.

Larger detached and semi-detached properties with multiple bathrooms across EX31 and EX32 are also commonly fitted with unvented cylinders, particularly where owners have updated from an original gravity-fed system. The town centre's older housing stock — terraces and smaller Victorian properties — is more likely to have a combi boiler or a vented cylinder. If you're not sure what you have, look for a tank in the loft (vented) or for a large insulated cylinder in the airing cupboard with no cold feed tank above it (unvented). South West Water supplies Barnstaple from the Venn treatment works, and the water here is relatively soft — typical hardness around 50–100mg/l CaCO3 compared to 200–300mg/l in parts of Kent and Essex. That means less scale accumulation on immersion heater elements than I was used to in the south-east. Annual servicing is still important — not primarily for scale but for safety device testing, anode inspection, and expansion vessel condition.
