How booking works
You book
Book online and your time is confirmed straight away. I work Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and I'm not an emergency service. If it isn't a job for me, I'll say so and point you to someone who can help, rather than going quiet on you.
You'll know when I'm coming
You choose a start time when you book, not a morning or an afternoon. It is an estimate, because the job before yours can finish early or run on. When I set off to you, you get a text with a link that shows where I am, so you can see when I'll be at the door.
Barnstaple houses and what a thermostat can do in them
Solid-wall Victorian terraces round the town centre, Newport and Pilton lose heat quickly. The saving there comes from not heating an empty house, so location-based control earns its keep.
Newer houses at Roundswell and Whiddon Valley hold heat well. The gain there is precision: the right temperature at the right times, and the app showing how long the boiler runs.
Hive, Tado or Nest: which suits your house?
Hive if you want simple control, Tado if your days don't follow a timetable, and Nest if you'd rather it learnt your routine.
Hive is the plainest of the three. It switches the boiler on and off, the app is clear, and it works with almost any boiler. A good choice if you want control from your phone and nothing more complicated.
Tado uses your phone's location, so the heating backs off when everyone has left and comes back on as you head home. If your days don't follow a timetable, that does more than any fixed schedule.
Nest learns your routine over the first couple of weeks and builds its own schedule. It suits people who like the idea of setting it and leaving it.

Will it work with your boiler?
Every one of these works with nearly every boiler by simple on-off switching. Some boilers can also talk to a thermostat through a protocol called OpenTherm, which lets the boiler turn its flame down rather than switching off and on. Not every boiler supports it, and some makes use their own system instead. Send me the make and model and I'll tell you what yours can do.
Combis are the simplest to fit. A system or regular boiler with a hot water cylinder has more wiring, because the thermostat has to control the hot water as well as the heating.
What does a smart thermostat cost to run and to buy?
Hive and Tado starter kits usually cost £150–£200 to buy, and a Nest Learning Thermostat is about the same, though prices move with the brand and what's current. Honeywell Evohome starts around £250 for the controller, and a full multi-room setup is closer to £400–£600.
Be realistic about savings. The Energy Saving Trust puts it around 10–15% off a heating bill, so a household spending £900–£1,200 a year on gas might save roughly £100–£150. If you already use a programmer carefully, expect the lower end.

For the wiring at the boiler, it makes sense to use one. The head unit is simple, but a wrongly wired receiver can lock a boiler out or leave the hot water uncontrolled.
