Heating Engineer in Great Torrington & the Torridge Valley

Great Torrington sits above the Torridge valley on a ridge with some of the finest views in Devon. And some of the worst weather, when the wind comes off the moor. It's a proper market town of around 6,800 people, a mix of Georgian and Victorian property in the centre, and a wider rural population spread across the surrounding parishes.

I'm George Lane, a Gas Safe registered heating engineer serving Great Torrington, Barnstaple, and North Devon. Great Torrington is around 20 minutes from Barnstaple via the B3232 and it's part of my regular North Devon patch.

The housing here, spread across the EX38 postcode that covers the town and the Torridge valley parishes, leans older: solid-walled stone cottages, Victorian terraces around Fore Street, and some mid-century semis on the outskirts. Older houses usually mean older heating systems, and when something goes wrong you want an engineer who'll look at repairing it before he starts talking about replacement. That's how I go about it.

A few local firms list Torrington in their coverage area, and the bigger companies cover it from further afield. I'd only say this: compare them on who actually answers the phone and who turns up when they said they would, not on whose website looks the smartest.

A fair number of properties around Great Torrington, particularly the older farmhouses and cottages, are off the gas grid and run on oil or LPG. My boiler and appliance work is mains gas only. LPG boiler work needs an appropriately LPG-qualified Gas Safe engineer, and oil boiler work needs an OFTEC-registered engineer. If you're in the town centre or on one of the newer estates you're almost certainly on mains gas. If you're in a rural farmhouse, you may well not be. Worth checking before you call.

For rural properties confirmed on mains gas, everything above applies as normal.
