A village that runs on the season

Why do seasonal boilers fail in April and August?
A boiler that stands idle for months and is then asked for full hot water overnight tends to fail in one of two places. The first is spring, on the first busy weekend, when a pump or diverter valve that has sat still all winter sticks. The second is the height of summer, when the house is full and the boiler runs showers back to back.
Neither is bad luck. A service before the first guests arrive catches most of it, and it's the most useful single booking an owner here can make. If the property is let, the landlord gas safety check can go on the same visit, which costs less than two:
A standard gas boiler service and a landlord gas safety check for one appliance on the same visit is £145, instead of £210 booked separately. With the full gas boiler service it is £225, instead of £290. Both prices include VAT. It costs less because it's one visit instead of two, and it can't be combined with any other reduction.
Is your Croyde property on mains gas?
Not every house around Croyde is. I work on mains gas only, so if there's a tank in the garden, your boiler runs on oil or LPG and I'm not the engineer for it. Oil needs an OFTEC-registered engineer. I don't work on LPG boilers. For LPG, you need a Gas Safe engineer whose registration covers LPG work.
Better to settle that on the phone than on your doorstep.

Leave the boiler powered and the frost setting on, with the heating held at a low temperature rather than switched off. On the service, I'll check the condensate pipe outside, because a frozen one is a common reason a boiler stops in a cold snap.
