What Happens During a Boiler Service in Fremington

- Expansion vessel pressure. Checked and re-pressurised where needed. A waterlogged vessel sets the PRV dripping and has you topping the system up over and over
- Safety device tests. Overheat thermostat and high-limit cutouts tested
- Inhibitor concentration test. A water sample tested to BS 7593
- Pipework visual inspection. Everything accessible checked for corrosion and leaks
- Full operational test. The boiler run through heating and hot water cycles

It has no colour and no smell, and low-level exposure produces symptoms you'd happily blame on something else. The annual service, and the flue gas analysis I run every visit in particular, is aimed squarely at catching incomplete combustion before CO becomes a risk.
I'd also want CO alarms on every floor with a gas appliance; BS EN 50291 covers the specification. They're cheap insurance against the one thing servicing can't cover: a boiler can develop a problem between visits, and an alarm gives you the warning a service can't.
Water Treatment and Inhibitors
BS 7593 requires all central heating systems to be treated with a corrosion inhibitor. Without enough inhibitor, a system builds magnetite sludge that blocks radiators and chews through heat exchangers and pumps. A water quality check is part of the service: inhibitor level, pH and any signs of corrosion in the system water. Topping up or replacing the inhibitor is not included, so if the system needs it I show you what I found and quote before doing anything.
I also check for a magnetic filter (Magnaclean, Adey MagnaClean Pro) on the boiler return. Those want cleaning every year, and if there isn't one I'll suggest fitting one. They make a genuine difference to how long a boiler lasts, particularly on an older system that already has some debris floating about.
